![]() Headhunting, as practiced, was a part of ritual warfare that had spiritual implications. The image of the Kalingas as bloodthirsty savages was perpetrated by the colonial ethnologic photographer Dean Worcester, who in 1912 published photographs of Cordilleran tribes in National Geographic, describing them as both exotic and terrifying in an attempt to justify American control of Northern Luzon, or what he called “No Man’s Land.” But reality was more nuanced. Whang-Od has tattooed more women than warriors, as headhunting was banned by the Americans in the early 1900s. But steel has long replaced the traditional cogon roofing of the homes, and wooden huts have made way for crowded, concrete structures. There is still no cell signal, and only a scant number of residents have WiFi. Modern conveniences haven’t completely transformed Buscalan, yet. What’s left is a strenuous climb through the rice terraces that a reasonably fit person can conquer in 40 minutes. But the dirt path from the turnoff in the municipality of Tinglayan, Kalinga-clearly marked by a sign that proclaims Welcome! Whang-Od Buscalan Tattoo Village-is now paved over, reducing hike time by over an hour. Sure, you still need to endure the 12 hour-body-numbing drive from Manila with its city gridlock to the winding mountain roads of the Cordilleras, swerving around landslide debris and oncoming trucks in dangerously foggy conditions. The remote village of Buscalan, home of the famed last mambabatok of her generation, has never been this accessible. The thousand-year-old practice of batok will live on, in Buscalan and around the world, thanks to the descendants whom Apo Whang-Od has been training and inspiring. ![]() Thus, my connection with Edan was established. A 2001 EP, Sprain Your Tapedeck, came before it but I somehow missed it when it was released. Three years later, his official debut album, Primitive Plus, combined a love of all things “pause tapes,” boom-bap and old-school onto the back of rhymes fashioned of an obsessive focus on performance. Situating himself in the New England city, 1999 would be where Edan would release the comical but infectious “Sing It. A focused student of Rock and Rap music, Edan parlayed his musical chops into a stint at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. But I can try to tell you what I've learned about Edan in my years of supporting his music.Įdan grew up, or at least attended schools, in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. Trying to explain what Edan was attempting with Beauty And The Beat isn't really fair to anyone, because it really can't be put into any box in my view. I don't find that disappointing or particularly frustrating, but it has made me wonder about my friends, associates and fellow writers along with their tastes. I expect that most people who have picked up Beauty And The Beat after my blathering about it probably didn't even see the huge deal. The fact is, saying such a thing about almost anything prepares it to fail in the eyes of an outsider. ![]() But the reality remains that there is no other album or piece of music in my collection that comes close to sparking the lofty words that appear below this paragraph. Ice-grilling backpackers (yes, they're still around) take heed: his output is a welcome breath of dusty fresh air.It is with a measurable amount of hesitation I state that Edan's second studio recording occupies such a high space. Sure, this record is a laugh overall, but don't pass this guy off as some patsy Har Mar Superstar jerkoff. The kickdrum-heavy, snot-nosed rhyming of "Schoolly D Knew the Time" pays homage to the Philadelphia emcee, further exposing the knack Edan has for a dirty, basement production style. Skillz Ferguson) evidences some convincing lyrical ability over a beat that runs the gamut of hip-hop references, flipping up eleven (!) times. At the risk of being a cornball, if you aren't smiling during this song, check your pulse. Over a poppy, Latin guitar, he reads: "Falafels with tahini/ Eggs scrambled with Monterey Jack cheese/ Cream of broccoli soup/ Portobello mushrooms/ Pigs in a blanket/ Mueslix." and so forth. While it's completely dull running down the technical on a song like this, it should be emphasized that Edan has honed in on his craft this clever recreation of a sound long dead in hip-hop is shockingly well-executed.Īctually, let's forget legitimizing- "Beautiful Food" is the funniest shit I've heard in years. Friends", a priceless plea for a new buddy to cool out with, comes complete with a young LL Cool J whisper: "Let's go over and play some video games/ At the arcade you know we'll just hang out/ Yeah, and we'll work on our rhymes/ My metaphors are okay, how are yours?" Adorable! Production-wise, the track is surprisingly nuanced with 808 drum rolls, immersed in timely handclaps. Lif arex92t enough hip-hop cred, Edan makes it abundantly clear on his own records: he knows what he's doing.Ĭombining the hilarity of his Biscuithead 12-inch debut (1999's "Sing It, Shitface") with the nostalgia of the recent Critical Beatdown-era tribute track "Ultra 88", this record is a retardedly good time. If recent outside production credits to Count Bass D and Mr. ![]() But by calling this release simple and amusing- and going along with the Golden Age production techniques- Sprain Your Tapedeck shouldn't be dismissed as mere 80s kitsch. Edan has himself mastered the tricks of all Roland's various x0x rhythm machines, putting his talent to good use to create this harmlessly facile, yet just plain fun, six-song (four are new) follow-up EP to the excellent Primitive Plus. Ditching the J-O-B, this rapper/DJ/producer instead bows down to the almighty Tadao Kikumoto, mastermind behind Roland. Evolution does not imply progress, only change, so there's no problem with Boston's triple-threat Edan ignoring this modern technological path. The ending does not feature the Army Corporal being caught, or a scene where Dillon shows up the Fort Dodge commander. The gun fight is lame, since the guy with the rifle, with a great clear shot, sitting in ambush, misses Dillon, who is riding a horse and shooting with a handgun. Ruta Lee is the key, and as soon as Dillon homes in on her, she crumbles because it bothers her that she saw two men getting killed. The rest of the episode goes downhill because too much time is spent on bar scenes and not enough is spent on Dillon tracking down the Army payroll, and interrogating Ruta Lee. The townfolks all find out that there might be Martial Law in Dodge, and they get feisty. It sounds so stupid that is plausible, since any commanding officer can do whatever he wants back in the Old West stories. Dillon asks, why weren't there soldiers protecting the supply wagon? The arrogant commander says he always has all his soldiers on military manouvers. The first question I had was why would the bandit bring his girlfriend to watch him murder two men in cold blood? The story builds up when the incompetent Fort Dodge commander shows up in Dodge City to dump the blame on Marshal Dillon. Income with undead on Casual/Normal/Veteran Difficulty ![]() Kuhnberg believes that it’s often something “kids age out of” and just dance contemporary. Bufferd thinks that it’s useful for imparting the idea of telling a story through movement and the body, and can also encourage dancers to take up space and make clearer energy lines - things that can be transferred to all other dance styles. “It’s a great introduction to how to use technique but release from the rules a little bit,” she believes. Kuhnberg sees lyrical as a useful bridge from ballet to contemporary for young dancers. What does lyrical bring to dance education and dance art more broadly? At the same time, and even though lyrical requires a lot of stable technique, “the music does the work for you.” “You can get in your ‘feels’ and it feels good!” he says. He believes that - in contrast - lyrical is popular in studios and in competition because it can help kids, tweens and teens get in touch with their emotions through dance. Campros, disagreeing somewhat, notes that there aren’t really lyrical companies or full-length productions - although it is seen “a little bit here and there on stage…it’s just not something I’d pay to see for two hours,” he says with a little laugh. Kuhnberg teaches mainly recreational students, so that’s not something she sees as often, she says.īufferd believes that some of what we call “contemporary” is actually interchangeable with “lyrical”, because of a centrality of storytelling and high level of emotional expression. ![]() ![]() There may also be a difference between what a lot of competition lyrical calls for and the skills 21 st century professional dancers need to get hired and thrive professionally. “There’s some freedom within definition of style, but I’ll often see ‘lyrical’ that’s full of acrobatics and think, ‘That’s not what I expected to see.’ It can feel a bit phony, and there aren’t many jobs for those skills,” Campros explains. ![]() “Many teachers have been doing lyrical for a long time and really set the stage for its proliferation and growth.”Ĭampros believes that a lot of the lyrical at competition isn’t really lyrical, because acrobatics and other technical tricks often overshadow storytelling and emotional expression - things that lyrical, strictly speaking, should put first. “You could dance lyrical to Celine Dion or Missy Elliott or Beethoven…the possibilities are limitless,” Bufferd affirms. That brings the question of what kind of music can accompany lyrical, or typically does accompany it. Lyrical began as a way to tell a story of a particular song through movement. While it’s certainly not a scientific sample, one can see here that there’s no shared, strict definition of lyrical amongst dance teaching artists. Kuhnberg says that dance parents will often ask her what lyrical is, and her go-to definition is “ballet technique with jazz styling with a mix of storytelling tied to a song.” That usually suffices to clear up parents’ confusion, she explains. He also believes that lyrical itself is “a style, not a technique.” With a riff on that sentiment, Bufferd says, ”Lyrical is a vibe if there’s a story to it, you’re probably dancing a derision of something that is a mature version of lyrical.”īufferd offers an analogy of an impressionist painting, particularly applicable to lyrical amongst dance forms - technique is the strokes in the painting, and style is the aesthetic effect one experiences when stepping back to see the full, clear picture. “If you don’t have that strong technical ballet base, it’s not going to feel good,” he affirms. What is lyrical? Where does it come from?īufferd sees lyrical as a derivative of jazz, “a freeing and beautiful jazz idiom.” Campros sees that jazz and ballet technical base but underscores ballet over jazz. To get clarity on these questions, Dance Informa speaks with three teaching artists: Jen Kuhnberg of Arlington Dance Place and Cheryl A Sullivan’s School of Dance and director of OnStage Dance Company Emily Bufferd of Steps on Broadway and Broadway Dance Center (BDC) and producer of The Young Choreographer’s Festival and Eric John Campros of BDC. |
